Whats Been Goin Down at 10thPVN!?!

With a couple months missed on this blog, here’s the quickest summary ever…

We have moved into our new space still in the San Fernando Valley!

We have a hell of a new schedule with growing programs everyday. As of right now, we’ve already been able to set up MMA Classes for anyone looking to get into Mixed Martial Arts and learn some new things (Taught by yours truly). We also have a Gi Program! That’s right…10th Planet Jiu Jitsu has an incredible Gi program taught by a Jean Jacque Machado Black Belt, Tim Antolin.Tim is an incredible BJJ Practitioner and his Gi Class is amazing. Aside from the MMA Class and Gi Class, we have added some weekend programs including Saturday morning Jiu Jitsu taught by Mike “Lobes” Frausto as well as Bhimers’ Sunday Wrestling/Conditioning Class. Both weekend classes are a ton of fun and with super technical guys. Aside from all of that new stuff, we have added more Fundamentals classes to the schedule as well as added more to Alders Advancded Nogi Jiu Jitsu Curriculum. If you’re at all curious about our schedule or anything liek that, give us a call or come down.

Now, aside from the amazing new facility, new programs and instructors…some things don’t change.

One thing that hasn’t changed…Coach Alder is always doing everything he can to bring in the best guys possible for us to learn from! In just the recent months, we have had both 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and incredible competitor Denny Prokopos and WEC/UFC Veteran, SES Master Javier Vasquez come down to the gym for seminars. Both seminars were absolutely incredible and a great time! Lots of notes!

Also…did we mention Eddie Bravo came down to break down “Muddy Waters” for us? That’s right! Eddie Bravo came down for a special class one night and showed us all some of the basics of the newly added to the system, Muddy Waters position. If you aren’t familiar with this yet…you should be.

Another thing that hasn’t changed much (though some new faces are in there :)) we still have an amazing competition team that is constantly growing. Folks who have been training with us for a little while want to test their skills in a competition format and we set them up to have the most positive experience possible with a  training camp style training and coaching you every step of the way.

Also, we continue to enjoy ourselves in every way possible outside of the gym as well. Just this past weekend we had our 10th Planet Van Nuys Beach Day. We all went down to the beach and barbecued, played games, and just hung out. It was great to spend some time outside and enjoy California in the summer time.

So there ya go, although I’m sure I missed some stuff, a rough quick summary of all that’s been going down at 10PVN! Happy rollin folks!

P.S. Check out the gallery to see some of the stuff I mentioned above!

Jason Scully Stapling Concepts

Hey guys, just a quick post here!

Jason Scully has an extremely popular YouTube channel amongst the Jiu Jitsu community. While the majority of his videos are a quick reference guide of techniques or movements, this one is a bit longer and more detailed about one of his key concepts to passing the guard, stapling.

“Stapling,” is a great idea to implement into your passing game. It can increase your passing percentage by quite a bit to simply apply this stapling technique and control the leg on the side you are passing to.

The beautiful thing about passing the Guard in Jiu Jitsu is that the concepts apply towards all different kinds of guards and just need to be adjusted accordingly. So, everything from Open Guard, Half Guard, etc. all have similar concepts to being passed, you just need to put the concepts into play to be successful. For example, controlling the hips and knees or keeping your opponent flat are all concepts that are essential for any kind of guard you find yourself attempting to pass.

Anyway, if you guys are having some trouble passing, this is a great video that explains this concept and you should all try it out no matter where you are having trouble passing from!

Also, last month at 10th Planet Van Nuys we worked quite a bit on our Full Guard Passing. Now, we are focusing on finishing the year strong with some Half Guard passing techniques. So, if you need some help with your passing game, come down to 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys and we’ll be more than happy to help you guys out!

Happy rollin!

Training Through The Holidays

Well, it’s officially that time of the year that we start to wind down and prep for the next year. The school semester is coming to a close (for those of us dealing with finals…may the force be with you…), we tend to slack off a bit in our workouts, and eventually get to skipping them.

DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!!!

Today I’m going to share with you guys the 5 Secrets to keep training through the holiday season to ensure that you keep your training on track and continue to make leaps and bounds in your game!

  1. Set goals: Check out Ryan Bradfords Training Goals for December
  2. Make a training schedule: For example, I never miss Monday and Wednesday morning classes. No matter what! This means that even if I slack off and don’t make all the classes I’m supposed to, I will still always go twice a week!
  3. Find a fun move! Find something new you want to start playing with and drilling. For example, the Deep Half Guard. If you’ve never really spent too much time in this versatile guard position, spend some time learning it. Your enthusiasm about what you’re now toying with will keep you motivated to coming to class and working towards your goals.
  4. Presents: Ask for presents that have something to do with Jiu Jitsu! Even if those new Sprawl shorts are your own personal present to yourself under the tree this year, do it! Get yourself something great and related to your sport to keep your love for the sport up and even more so, get you excited to rock that new gear on the mats!
  5. Enjoy the holidays! Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, or whatever it is that you celebrate….celebrate it! Eat up and enjoy good food! Don’t be too strict about your diet, etc. and enjoy this festive time of the year with your loved ones.

Well, there you have it folks! 5 Tips to keep you on the mats and making gains through the holidays! Have fun and keep training! Remember, never take too much time off during the holidays! If you guys are close with your team like I am with mine at 10th Planet Van Nuys, celebrate the holiday season with them on the mats! Take care!

The Bruce Lee Influence on Modern MMA

Bruce Lee is, in my opinion, the most influential martial artist of all time. Today, November 27th is his birthday and he would have been 72 years old today.

He has made such an incredible impact on the world of martial arts and society in general.  I have always been heavily influenced by Bruce Lee in my own personal quest of martial arts. I’ve watched movies and read a few books about some of his philosophies on martial arts and life and he was so ahead of his time.

Lee didn’t allow himself to be confined to one particular style in his quest for the most applicable martial arts for combat. He would search for more and more ways to be more effective rather than sticking with “tradition.”

Mixed Martial Arts has gone through an evolution similar to that of Bruce Lees’ personal development in the martial arts. Here’s a video from Roots of Fight featuring Paul Lazenby, Eddie Bravo, and Ralek Gracie.

Are you ready to get started on your martial arts path? What are you waiting for?

Come down to 10th Planet Van Nuys and get started! We’ll see you on the mats!

Monday Morning 11/26 Guard Passing!

Hey guys & gals, it’s been a few days since my last post and I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and had some good time off! I munched down this weekend with the family and wrecked shop on several plates of Turkey, yams, and more for the holiday!

But, it’s Monday and back to practice! I attended this morning practice and we had a solid group. It was good to see some new faces in there today as well as all the usual suspects!

We started off with some great stability ball drills. Now, if you’ve never worked with the stability ball to improve your jiu jitsu, check it out! There are plenty of video clips on YouTube of drills and exercises you can do on the stability ball to improve your ground transitions, balance, and overall fitness (Expect an article soon on more ways the Stability Ball can help YOUR game)! Or, you can always come down to 10th Planet Van Nuys and watch my training partner, Mike “Lobes” Frausto kill it on that thing!

Anyway, after a few drills, we partnered up and worked on our Guard passing like we have been all month long. First was the Knee Slice Pass (My personal favorite. check out the link to the video I posted of it here) and we all got plenty of reps in! We even covered the sped up variation that you drive through in much faster fashion, landing you in the Kesa Gatame position.

Next was our Half stack series and our cover of the style of passing GSP uses in virtually all of his fights! For those of you UFC fans, George St. Pierre uses a style of passing that is extremely effective and he inches his way from Full Guard all the way to Side Control, bit by bit.

After all of our technique drilling, I got some rolling in and it was a great training session overall.

Another great day @ 10th Planet Van Nuys in the books and I can’t wait to get back on the mats tomorrow! Gabe out!
