10th Planet Van Nuys Visits 10th Planet West LA!

On Wednesday, November 21st, the 10th Planet Van Nuys crew headed down to 10th Planet West LA for an evening training session! 10th Planet West LA is led by 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Scott “Einstein” Epstein. Scott had lots of great techniques to show us and we were all very excited to train with those beasts!

The West LA crew was more than hospitable to our large group that went down there for the festivities. We started out the class with some warm ups and some different pummeling and takedown techniques. I particularly enjoyed this part of the class as Scott showed some great details to the Ankle pick Takedown and even showed us some great tips to pass the guard straight from the takedown!

We then moved on to the Halfguard Lockdown position, something the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system is very much known for. Although very few people in the room were unfamiliar with some of the moves, Scott gave us some tips to keep our Lockdown tight and he refreshed some ideas about the Whip Up.

Once we found ourselves on our sides, then came the fun and Scott demonstrated how to finish the Electric Chair submission! The Electric Chair submission stretches out your opponent using the lockdown and shoulder pressure to put pressure on the hips, groin, etc.

However, some opponents may be resistant to the submission and Scott showed us how we can move to the Electric Chair sweep from that position. He also showed some counters to the Sweep and how we can move around them and work to pass the guard. He even showed an off- shoot and how to hit a Calf slicer submission from one of the sweep attempts!

After learning all these great techniques, the West LA crew was game for some fun times free rolling. Everyone had a great time training together and it was an amazing experience visiting them! I can’t wait to train with those guys again!

P.S. If you guys ever want to learn more about the Electric Chair or any of the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system and you live in the San Fernando Valley area…what are you waiting for? Come down to 10th Planet Van Nuys and check us out! See you on the mats!

Importance of Guard Passing & My Favorite One!

Learning to Pass the Guard in BJJ can be a very difficult task to say the least. The frustration that ensues after several attempts at advancing to a superior position is immense! So, focus on your guard passing ability!

The option to attack off your back is what makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu such a unique martial art and therefore, attacks from the Guard tend to be a bit emphasized at many BJJ schools. However, to be a well- rounded grappler and even better your understanding of Jiu Jitsu as a whole, you must drill a few solid guard passes relentlessly so that they become muscle memory.

A few articles ago, I wrote about what exactly “perfect side control,” is and how to improve your side control once you have passed the Guard (5 Tips for Perfect Side Control). However, remember that Perfect Side Control only exists once you have passed your opponents guard!

So, to make things a bit easier, here’s a video of my favorite guard pass from David Avellan. Alder Hampel has had us drilling a variation of this particular pass, in addition to a few others, all month long at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys and I feel that everyones passing game has gotten much better! In addition, people have gotten better at their sweeps, submissions, and guard recovery skills to counter all these improvements in our passing game!

So, check out this video! I really enjoy David Avellans’ stuff and this pass is one of my favorites! If you need any help learning more about how to pass the guard in Nogi Jiu Jitsu or MMA, come on down to 10th Planet Van Nuys and we’ll start improving your passing game right away!

10 Tips to Finishing the Triangle Choke

The Triangle Choke is a chokehold in which you figure four your legs around your opponents neck and arm stopping the blood to the brain, forcing them to tap. This choke has been shown to be effective all the way up to the highest levels of competition in the UFC. Recently, we watched Joe Lauzon choke out Jamie Varner with a Triangle Choke, winning himself Submission of the Night honors!

Adding the Triangle Choke to your arsenal of weapons from the guard will make your ground game that much more dangerous. This choke ends plenty of fights in BJJ, Grappling, and MMA.

High Crotch Takedown Finish- Running the Pipe

Takedowns are very rarely trained at lots of Jiu Jitsu schools. This is a shame because what’s the use in having a great ground game if you can’t get the fight to the ground? For MMA, Competition, or a Self Defense Situation, some basic wrestling skills are essential.

So we’ve been working the High Crotch Takedown at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys for a week or two now and we’ve learned a few great set ups! We’ve been setting it up with inside ties, outside, an undertook and head control, etc. We’ve also finished this takedown with a pick up and dump or switched it to a double leg.
This video shows a great option if your opponent keeps their weight back as you try to switch to the double.
Check it out!
I’ll be repping this technique Friday at Open Mat if anyone wants to jump in with me. Come down to 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys and learn some great takedowns and how to finish the fight once it hits the ground!
