Here, I’ll log all of my personal training experiences at 10th Planet Van Nuys

Training Log 10/20/15

Haven’t done one of these in a while but here goes.

Tonight was a good solid night of training at 10th Planet Van Nuys.

On Tuesdays I teach a fundamentals bjj class before training in Advanced class. This month in Fundamentals we’re doing the mount position and in Advanced we’re focusing on some closed or basic open guard sweeps. Old school Jiu jitsu and I love it.

Personally, today I wanted to focus on some of my X Guard Sweeps and maybe some basic Kimura attacks from side control or North South. Some tough rolls in the room but all in all it was a good training day. I definitely know I want to work on some guard retention stuff. I was getting passed fairly often by some of the higher belts and that roll can get rough once they’ve passed.

That being said, a huge piece of advice given to me a while back recently resurfaced in the form of a Marcelo Garcia video where he talks about defense.

“Staying offensive keeps your opponent reacting to you and therefore you aren’t reacting to them. Keep them on the defensive”

We finished with some Padwork and drilling. I’ll be cornering a few of my fighters on November 22nd at an amateur MMA promotion. Anyway, I’ll be back at it tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Wrasslin’ @ 10PVN!

Hey guys, some schedule changes and new things goin on!

There is now Sunday Wrestling Class at 11am! This class used to be run by Coach Bhimer at 11:30 but now Coach Lobes will be running it about 30 minutes earlier. This class is great because it consists of a bunch of solid wrestling drills to get us able to execute them in a live scenario.

Wrestling is a huge part of the grappling game. Without a takedown of some kind, all the jiu jitsu in the world might not be able to really help.

Initiating Takedowns and Avoiding Takedowns is absolutely crucial. Definitely catch me in that class trying to up the standing part of my grappling game and you all should be too.

Not to mention, it’s a hell of a workout…

Anyway, come down to 10PVN on Sundays if you want to see some great wrestling techniques to add to your BJJ game!

Whats Been Goin Down at 10thPVN!?!

With a couple months missed on this blog, here’s the quickest summary ever…

We have moved into our new space still in the San Fernando Valley!

We have a hell of a new schedule with growing programs everyday. As of right now, we’ve already been able to set up MMA Classes for anyone looking to get into Mixed Martial Arts and learn some new things (Taught by yours truly). We also have a Gi Program! That’s right…10th Planet Jiu Jitsu has an incredible Gi program taught by a Jean Jacque Machado Black Belt, Tim Antolin.Tim is an incredible BJJ Practitioner and his Gi Class is amazing. Aside from the MMA Class and Gi Class, we have added some weekend programs including Saturday morning Jiu Jitsu taught by Mike “Lobes” Frausto as well as Bhimers’ Sunday Wrestling/Conditioning Class. Both weekend classes are a ton of fun and with super technical guys. Aside from all of that new stuff, we have added more Fundamentals classes to the schedule as well as added more to Alders Advancded Nogi Jiu Jitsu Curriculum. If you’re at all curious about our schedule or anything liek that, give us a call or come down.

Now, aside from the amazing new facility, new programs and instructors…some things don’t change.

One thing that hasn’t changed…Coach Alder is always doing everything he can to bring in the best guys possible for us to learn from! In just the recent months, we have had both 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and incredible competitor Denny Prokopos and WEC/UFC Veteran, SES Master Javier Vasquez come down to the gym for seminars. Both seminars were absolutely incredible and a great time! Lots of notes!

Also…did we mention Eddie Bravo came down to break down “Muddy Waters” for us? That’s right! Eddie Bravo came down for a special class one night and showed us all some of the basics of the newly added to the system, Muddy Waters position. If you aren’t familiar with this yet…you should be.

Another thing that hasn’t changed much (though some new faces are in there :)) we still have an amazing competition team that is constantly growing. Folks who have been training with us for a little while want to test their skills in a competition format and we set them up to have the most positive experience possible with a  training camp style training and coaching you every step of the way.

Also, we continue to enjoy ourselves in every way possible outside of the gym as well. Just this past weekend we had our 10th Planet Van Nuys Beach Day. We all went down to the beach and barbecued, played games, and just hung out. It was great to spend some time outside and enjoy California in the summer time.

So there ya go, although I’m sure I missed some stuff, a rough quick summary of all that’s been going down at 10PVN! Happy rollin folks!

P.S. Check out the gallery to see some of the stuff I mentioned above!

Back At It! Training Log for December!

Hey guys!

First things first, gotta apologizing for not posting for a while. I was hurt (pinched nerve), then finals for school and it has taken some time to get back into the swing of things.

But I promise to update all of you with everything that has happened in the past weeks.

First, I want to take some time to mention my injury. I pinched a nerve in my neck during a sparring session. I got my neck cranked in a bad transition and it just happened. It’s okay. It’s important to understand that these things happen and injuries are part of the game.

Next, I want to mention we had our 10th Planet Van Nuys Holiday Party. We hit up Hokkaido Seafood Buffet for a night of fun times with friends, family, good food, and ugly sweaters. Great times with my 10th Planet Van Nuys fam!

As mentioned in previous articles, we’ve been covering Half Guard passing all month long at 10th Planet Van Nuys. This month has really increased everyones passing percentages and it’s clear to see in class. People are passing half guards with great technique and lots of pressure!

My favorite pass that we’ve covered is the Twister Pass. The Twister Pass is a great pass to break the lockdown, establish Twister Side Control and even catch a really sneaky Kimura attack. Since adding this pass to my game, my passing percentage has not only gone up, but my whole top game! With good passing comes more attempts at top positions and therefore, a  higher chance of catching a submission.

All in all, a great month of learning and fun times in the heart of the San Fernando Valley.

Remember, if you guys want to be part of a strong, family- oriented team, come down to 10th Planet Van Nuys and see what we’re all about!

Take care and happy holidays folks!

Monday Morning 11/26 Guard Passing!

Hey guys & gals, it’s been a few days since my last post and I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and had some good time off! I munched down this weekend with the family and wrecked shop on several plates of Turkey, yams, and more for the holiday!

But, it’s Monday and back to practice! I attended this morning practice and we had a solid group. It was good to see some new faces in there today as well as all the usual suspects!

We started off with some great stability ball drills. Now, if you’ve never worked with the stability ball to improve your jiu jitsu, check it out! There are plenty of video clips on YouTube of drills and exercises you can do on the stability ball to improve your ground transitions, balance, and overall fitness (Expect an article soon on more ways the Stability Ball can help YOUR game)! Or, you can always come down to 10th Planet Van Nuys and watch my training partner, Mike “Lobes” Frausto kill it on that thing!

Anyway, after a few drills, we partnered up and worked on our Guard passing like we have been all month long. First was the Knee Slice Pass (My personal favorite. check out the link to the video I posted of it here) and we all got plenty of reps in! We even covered the sped up variation that you drive through in much faster fashion, landing you in the Kesa Gatame position.

Next was our Half stack series and our cover of the style of passing GSP uses in virtually all of his fights! For those of you UFC fans, George St. Pierre uses a style of passing that is extremely effective and he inches his way from Full Guard all the way to Side Control, bit by bit.

After all of our technique drilling, I got some rolling in and it was a great training session overall.

Another great day @ 10th Planet Van Nuys in the books and I can’t wait to get back on the mats tomorrow! Gabe out!
