Hey guys, some schedule changes and new things goin on!
There is now Sunday Wrestling Class at 11am! This class used to be run by Coach Bhimer at 11:30 but now Coach Lobes will be running it about 30 minutes earlier. This class is great because it consists of a bunch of solid wrestling drills to get us able to execute them in a live scenario.
Wrestling is a huge part of the grappling game. Without a takedown of some kind, all the jiu jitsu in the world might not be able to really help.
Initiating Takedowns and Avoiding Takedowns is absolutely crucial. Definitely catch me in that class trying to up the standing part of my grappling game and you all should be too.
Not to mention, it’s a hell of a workout…
Anyway, come down to 10PVN on Sundays if you want to see some great wrestling techniques to add to your BJJ game!
Bruce Lee is, in my opinion, the most influential martial artist of all time. Today, November 27th is his birthday and he would have been 72 years old today.
He has made such an incredible impact on the world of martial arts and society in general. I have always been heavily influenced by Bruce Lee in my own personal quest of martial arts. I’ve watched movies and read a few books about some of his philosophies on martial arts and life and he was so ahead of his time.
Lee didn’t allow himself to be confined to one particular style in his quest for the most applicable martial arts for combat. He would search for more and more ways to be more effective rather than sticking with “tradition.”
Mixed Martial Arts has gone through an evolution similar to that of Bruce Lees’ personal development in the martial arts. Here’s a video from Roots of Fight featuring Paul Lazenby, Eddie Bravo, and Ralek Gracie.
In this video, from Submissions 101, we’re shown the basic Darce Choke.
The Darce Choke is a blood choke in Nogi grappling often hit from side control, turtle, or even the Half Guard position. This is an extremely effective choke for Nogi Competition, MMA, and Submission Wrestling.
I personally love this move and all of the attacks off of it (Ninja Choke, Guillotine, etc.).
This month at 10th Planet Van Nuys, we’ll be covering the Darce Choke, Anaconda Choke, Japanese Necktie, and plenty of other variations! Come down to 10th Planet Van Nuys and check out a class! See you on the mats! 😉
David Hah is a 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt under Alder Hampel as well as an Amateur Mixed Martial Artist. I train with him on a regular basis and he’s an absolute beast! Feel free to check out his blog and keep up with him.
Also, remember, if you ever thought about training in Jiu Jitsu in the San Fernando Valley, feel free to come down to 10th Planet Van Nuys to try out a class 😉
