The Arm Drag

The Arm Drag is one of the most versatile set ups in all of grappling.

IMG_9066Originally this move was used in freestyle wrestling as a set up to different takedowns, a transitionary position to other grips, etc. but it has found its way into modern day Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Marcelo Garcia is one of, if not the greatest BJJ competitor of all time and one of his signature moves is his arm drag.

In the most basic explanation of the move Arm Drags are used to make your way towards your opponents back. The reason why this technique is favored by tons of different grapplers today is because of its versatility. Transitions, scrambles, new positions, and more all become available. From wrestling and standup techniques to different guard positions the arm drag could quickly change the momentum of the match.
So why did this technique become so popular in recent years in grappling?

Well, in short, it’s a high reward technique. In a perfect world, the arm drag would bring you from in front of your partner to all the way to the back. In a wrestling/mma/self defense scenario being behind your partner in a stand up scenario allows for a variety of techniques. Takedowns from the back, standing chokes, and more are some of the great offensive
reasons to execute this technique. From a defensive standpoint, there are plenty of good things but mainly you are no longer in danger of strikes since you are behind your opponent.

From a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu perspective it’s all of the things I previously mentioned and more incentive. In competition the back position is worth the most points and is deemed the most dominant position in BJJ. Well, using the arm drag can take you from a bottom position like butte
rfly guard to the most dominant position in all of grappling in a matter of seconds.

The Arm Drag is an effective, highly versatile and important technique in my opinion. Some notable people to watch while perfecting this move are (again) Marcelo Garcia, Cobrinha, the Mendes Bros, and more to name a few in the BJJ community.

There are a variety of different grips and methods to doing this move. My suggestion for beginning grapplers is to learn any basic way to execute this move and drill it with a partner until it becomes second nature. While rolling, you’ll see this move pop up constantly- go for it and believe in it.

Hey guys, some schedule changes and new things goin on!

There is now Sunday Wrestling Class at 11am! This class used to be run by Coach Bhimer at 11:30 but now Coach Lobes will be running it about 30 minutes earlier. This class is great because it consists of a bunch of solid wrestling drills to get us able to execute them in a live scenario.

Wrestling is a huge part of the grappling game. Without a takedown of some kind, all the jiu jitsu in the world might not be able to really help.

Initiating Takedowns and Avoiding Takedowns is absolutely crucial. Definitely catch me in that class trying to up the standing part of my grappling game and you all should be too.

Not to mention, it’s a hell of a workout…

“Tune My Game” Braulio Estima

Incredible! If you haven’t seen some the Stuart Cooper Films you are definitely missing out. Go check him out. This video is about Braulio Estima in his new Youtube Video called “Tune My Game.” As the title suggests, he works with some grapplers to help them improve on different parts of their game including the Darce, Half Guard, etc. Personally, I loved this video and hope to see much more to this series. Braulio is a world class grappler and amazing teacher, you can really feel his passion when he speaks about techniques and philosophies on the game. As previously mentioned, Stuart Cooper made this video and as usual, it is absolutely on point. I just posted an article on his video “The Spirit of Jiu Jitsu” and that is one of my favorites as well. Check it out and get your game tuned! 

8 Basic Positions for Beginning Grapplers

With all the unique attacks and moves in jiu jitsu comes plenty of positions. Learning all the advanced positions in jiu jitsu can be confusing at first but Head Coach of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys Alder Hampel and I have come up with eight basic positions to get you started. After learning and mastering these, you’ll be ready to go on and learn all the other fun stuff in the vast world that is jiu jitsu.

The most basic position out there is where every fight starts… standing. With both fighters on their feet, people have a variety of options. Grapplers can lock up for a clinch, shoot for a takedown, or go for a trip or throw in order to get the fight to the ground. If you’re looking to develop your grappling game for self defense, MMA, or competition, you should be familiar with at least 1 or 2 takedowns to start with.

After the takedown, the most common position to land in, is the infamous Guard position. This is achieved when one fighter is kneeling in between another grapplers legs and the legs are around the waist. What makes BJJ so unique from other grappling arts is the ability to attack from the bottom position which most of the time, is deemed “inferior.” From here, the person playing bottom has a variety of sweeps and submissions depending on the type of guard they want to play. With things like Standard Closed Guard, RubberGuard, Overhooks,  Underhooks,  and more, the guard is an incredibly versatile position with endless moves. However, start by familiarizing yourself with the standard guard position and from there, you will prepare yourself to learn all the other guards. Some of the attacks that are well known in the guard are the armbar, triangle, kimura, or the guillotine choke. The top player however, should be looking to stay safe from attacks and eventually pass the guard.

One of those other forms of guards is the downed or Open Guard with your opponent still standing. If you are on the mat and your opponent is standing in front of you, they are in your downed open guard. This can happen many ways. The person on top can complete a trip takedown of some sort to drop their opponent or they could have just stood up from inside the bottom persons guard. Also, the bottom player could have initiated this by simply siting to their butt without contact with their opponent. In MMA, the standing fighter could have landed a powerful shot sending their opponent crashing onto the mat. And the list of possibilities goes on and on. Also, it’s important to note that there are multitudes of different Open Guards: XGuard. De La Riva, Reverse De La Riva, and more.

From here, the person on bottom will be playing the same game as the previously mentioned closed guard working for sweeps or submissions. The person standing will also be doing the same as before by trying to pass the guard to gain a more dominant position.

While attempting to advance to a dominant position, the top grappler can often get trapped in the bottom fighters Half Guard. Half guard is when the bottom player has their legs trapping one of the top fighters legs, preventing them from fully passing the guard. Although it’s still a bottom position, this position is perfect for sweeps. There are a few submissions to hit from half guard, but sweeps are the go-to move for most half guard players. The 10th Planet system is known for developing an incredible sweep game for bottom players by utilizing the Lockdown. What other positions?

4 Submissions No Beginning Grappler Should Go Without

Lately, we have had lots of new faces at the gym and every grappler that’s just starting up has things they need to work on and it can be a bit overwhelming. But by focusing on core fundamental movements, jiu jitsu can be much easier to handle. These are four basic submissions Coach Alder and I thought would be perfect for any beginner to learn. If mastered, these basic submissions work at the highest levels of jiu jitsu. Also, in order to successfully defend submission attempts, you need to to know what the submissions are. So here are the four basic subs that beginning grapplers should focus on understanding and mastering.
