As December 10 draws closer, we all grow more and more excited for UFC 140: Jones vs Machida! With the Light Heavyweight Championship on the line, everyone’s very excited to see if the “Karate Kid,” can dethrone Jones, the youngest UFC Champ in history or if Jones will remain champion by utilizing his amazing athleticism and reach. Also on the main card, both Nogueira brothers will be fighting as well as Frank Mir, Tito Ortiz, Claude Patrick, Brian Ebersole, Mark Hominick, and Chan Sung Jung.
Jon Jones vs Lyoto Machida
Jon “Bones” Jones won the Light Heavyweight championship via TKO against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 to become the youngest champion in UFC history. He then went on to defend his belt at UFC 135 against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and submitted Rampage. Jones has proved to be an incredible fighter despite his youth. With an 84.5 inch reach (longest in the UFC) he can attack his opponents at a much longer reach. Also equipped with incredible athleticism, great wrestling skills, and a very unorthodox striking style Jones seems to be unstoppable to many.
However, Lyoto ” The Dragon” Machida looks to take back the title during his bout with Jones. Machida lost the title to Shogun at UFC 113 via TKO but after his knockout victory over Randy Couture at UFC 129 with an amazing jumping front kick, the fans felt he deserved his shot at the belt. With an extensive Karate background, Machida has a very difficult style for anyone to deal with. Lots of feints, foot sweep attacks, evasive movements, and more. He’s also a BJJ black belt and has competed in Sumo!
Overall, I’m predicting this fight to be a really good one with an awesome display of striking. I’m predicting Jones to utilize his reach very well here because he’ll need to use his jab a lot to gauge the distance because lunging at Machida is a bad idea and I’m sure he knows that. I think we’ll also see some of Jones’ wrestling used again here. I’m really torn as to who’s gunna end up winning it but I like Machida a lot.
Mir vs Nogueira
Frank Mir will be squaring off with “Big Nog” Minotauro Nogueira as well on the card. Both fighters have incredible boxing and jiu jitsu skills but the last time they met, Frank Mir put away Nog in the 2nd with an amazing TKO finish. Although they are both great fighters witha similar skill set, I predict Mir to win this one again. He looks to be in better shape and I think his boxing is just crisper and I feel like he can utilize kicks better than Nogueira. Although I see the advantage mainly on the feet for this particular fight, he’s one of my favorite heavyweights because of his awesome ground skills. How often does a big man move like him on the mat?!?
Ortiz vs Nogueira
Rogerio, the twin brother of Big Nog will step into the cage with the Huntington Beach Bad Boy Tito Ortiz. Tito’s coming off a loss to Rashad Evans but before that he choked out Ryan Bader via guillotine choke. He’s hoping to coming out of the battle with the BJJ black belt on December 10th victorious. I think Rogerios key point to winning the fight will be stopping the once UFC Light Heavyweight champs takedown attempts. Of course that’s more easily said than done because Tito has proven to be one of the best wrestlers in MMA when he was in his prime. But if Rogerio can keep it standing, I see him winning it.
With other fights like Patrick vs Ebersole and Hominick vs “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung, UFC 140 should be a night full of awesome fights.
